field study & data collection
Your team will test 7 sections of the Coochin Creek collecting water samples to test both immediately and back at the laboratory. Each sample will be clearly numbered and named, indicating the location where the sample was taken and the date. As an analytical chemist you know that good quality water must:
Dissolved oxygen testing will take place on site (at each location). Temperature , pH , conductivity and turbidity data will also be collected on site by the members of your team . All other testing will occur in either the GCCC Chemistry Lab or the USC Chemistry Lab
- have a relatively low salt content
- relatively high (DO) dissolved oxygen levels
- relatively low (BOD) biological oxygen demand
- contain few pathogens
- contain no toxin-producing substance, ie blue-green algae
- contain low concentration of heavy metals, etc
